Spalted Tamarind Frame with Brass Splines

from $200.00

Finely crafted spalted tamarind frame with brass splines.

Spalting in wood comes from the natural growth of fungi after a tree dies or becomes sick/compromised. As different fungal colonies grow within the tree, unique patterns and voids are formed. As a result, the wood takes on an incredibly beautiful look that speaks to the chaos of nature and the circle of life.

To make these, I carefully choose which and how each piece will fit in the frame. Once glued together, a groove is cut in order to add the brass accent splines and provide additional strength to the miter joints. Once the frame is assembled, I fill any larger voids caused by the spalting to create a uniform surface. I then route an 1/8" round-over on the most prominent edges, sand everything to 220 grit, and finish with two coats of Rubio Monocoat hardwax oil, leaving a satin finish.

Due to the highly labor-intensive process, material cost is relatively negligible. Therefore, different widths of frame are priced the same.
